Need help with a Ebay Motors question

My father is purchasing a 1963 Ford from ebay motors within the next week. I personally do not have much ebay experience, and certainly nothing of that magnitude in cost. Are there steps he can take to protect himself with such a large transaction? The car isn't local and will be shipped.
Any guys/gals here that bought a car on ebay or other pricey things please chime in, any help will be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks!

How much are we talkin?

I sent the check ahead of time, and flew up to take posession of the car I bought on ebay.

I also did research about the owner ... he was a big time poster on car related forum.
