Sounds to me like the drive is dead. Did you try a lens cleaning CD? You can get these at radio shack etc. The disk has a little set of brushes that actually clean the lens. It's worth a try. If the unit is still in warranty, try to get an RMA and send it back. Good luck!

Magnets and computers should never be put together. I still have to yell at people here for putting magnets on the side of their computer cases (Pizza Hut, etc).

At first I thought you meant Sub's as in sandwiches!!!! The magnets should not have hurt anything in the CD-rom, but they should NEVER be used around PC's. Not unlike ericb, I have repeatedly asked people not to stick magnets on the sides of thier PC's. I had one lady who had a huge cow magnet with a spring clip she used to hold papers to the side while whe typed them into word. The magnet screwed up the floppy disks she was using to back up her word docs! Again, good luck. If it was the magnets, then you should be looking for a new unit. ;)

I'd be checking the IDE cable on the cdrom and the motherboard connector, and also, you might want to get a can of compressed air to spray out the inside of the drive from the opening where the drawer is. Just remember, though, that with the price of these things, any additional monies put into it might be throwing good money after bad.
