Need help with a buddy's Asus A7N8X Deluxe (posts, but doesn't move past splash screen)

My buddy has a mobo w/ the bare reqs. in it right now (vid. card, cpu, mem). Once turned on, a signal is sent to the keyboard(it lights up and I can select caps lock, etc) and then it shows a splash screen. It stays there for forever. It says that I can hit tab or alt-f2 to enter post or settings, but neither works. Furthermore, at that point I can no longer turn on/off caps lock, numlock or anything else. We've tried both ps2 and usb keyboards with the same result. I tried clearing the CMOS, but that didn't help.
 
Well all that's hooked up is the cpu (athlon xp, video card (ti4200), and memory 512mb(1 stick Corsair XMS)
