Hey everyone.

Its time to upgrade again. Im going to use my old computer for my office. I have an 800$ budget to work with. I do not need a monitor, case, psu, optical drives, or keyboard/mouse.

I want to limit my video card to 200$ for the 800. I was looking at this card:

X850XT

I've been wanting to try out nvidia again though. SO Im open to any suggestions.

Please help a brotha out!

Here's a X850XT that's a little cheaper than the one you posted.

I would say that right now, the X850XT is the best bang for the buck under 200$. The only competitor from Nvidia is the 7600GT. The X850 has faster raw power compared to the 7600, but it does lack features such as SM3 and HDR, if you care about those. So I guess it really depends if you want those features or not, because both of those cards are good for the price.

Check out your local computer shops - I am sure they will be happy to help you build a custom rig.

If you don't have the effort to even tell us what the system is for (or at least give us some evidence of effort of searching around on what parts you might need) - then I don't have the effort to help you.

What do you do with the machine? Have you had a look for other "rate my build" threads as they should give you a few hints.

Great post Mr.Happy, you cut right to the heart of the matter.

OP, Homework time. See the tabs at the top of this page?? Click on the one marked Guides. Now look for budget builds, you will find a few. Sometimes the older mid-range builds are now considered budget, so have a read of a few of those too. This will atleast get your feet wet, help you and those that WILL help you.

Ok. Sorry for being lazy.

The wishlist looks excellent. So for $800 you do not need a case or PSU?
You could also save some money by going single core. A 3200+ is almost guaranteed to hit 2.4 GHz, usually even higher, and can be had for about $150.
 
No would not need a case or psu. I have that already. Im leaning towards the x850xt now as well for my v card.

You'll need two PCI-e x16 ports for the X850XT, which that mobo doesn't have. Simply, it's not compatible. You may want to look for another mobo if you want the X850XT, or just simply get the 7600GT.

No he needs 1 pci-e slot and enough room beside it for the fan. Looks like enough room to me judging from the picture.

Heres my 5 cents: Unless your planning to overclock get some cheaper ram. you can get 2 gigs of value for around 125+ and save some money. Performance will not take a big hit at all.

Also My vote is for the x850xt, unless you play oblivion and want to turn on HDR. Its just faster.

The X850XT is a good card, but i'm a Nvida fan so i'd probably go for a passive 7600 myself.

Yes, it does have a dual slot cooler, but that only means that it will cover up the slot directly below it, whether that is a PCIe slot or a regular PCI slot. But nothing actually goes into the second slot.

OP, why are you leaning towards the X850? Those cards are nearly equal in performance, yet the 7600 will support HDR, run cooler and quieter, likely OC better, and is the newest generation. I would definitely go with the 7600 unless you can get the X850 for quite a bit cheaper.

How is it faster when It only has 12 pipelines vs 16? And 128 ram interface is just terrible.

I know what you are saying, but tests show that the 7600GT is much more than your typical mid range card. It's actually a quite impressive card and IMO is the very reason you are seeing the such low prices for the X850XT's.

From what I read the x860xt was superior in raw power and in overclocking. The only drawback was the lack of 3.0 and HDR. Also, that these features would only be needed in the future and by then I would need to upgrade the card anyway to play the games that needed this at a decent framerate.

So the mobo I chose would be able to fit the x850xt correct?

I do want to overclock the processors and want a dual cpu setup. Let me know if the 3800's would be good for that. I was also looking at the opterons at about 40$ more.


I would love to hit 2.4 on stock cooling as I've read on newegg. The 1.8ghz opteron was reviewed at hitting 2.7 on the stock hsf as well.

Buying x2s for Ocing are more of a crapshoot than buying opterons for OCing. My x2 didnt go over 2.3. Switched it for an opty and im hitting 2.7 easy (stuck it at 2.5 to keep my case cool) Thats my experience anyways, some people had luck with them.


If you want to OC reliably tho, you'd need some good OCin hardware.

For that I recommend a DFI NF4 Ultra lanparty mobo , G.skill DDR500s (the $165? ones on newegg) and a good PSU( by good psu I mean $70+, brand name(OCZ,Antec,Enermax), 480watt+).

 
Would the opteron be ok in the current setup that I listed on page one? or should i just stick with the 3800+'s. Also how about the ram that I listed?

Opteron's are excellent chips and are likely to OC higher than their eqivalent X2, but of course there are no guarantees on this. Also the Opterons all have 1MB L2 cache/core where the X2 3800+ has only 512K/core.

If they are close in price, the Opteron is definitely the way to go IMO.
