Need help with 3dark 2001 and drivers and all sorts of things...

😕

Just built new computer, runs great so I wanted to test it in 3d Mark 2001. Its an Athlon 1800+ with a geforce 3 Ti200 (Core clock speed 202 mhz and memory clock speed 458 mhz) and after first testing in 3dmark got a score of 3352 with all the stuff enabled at 1024 by 768. Talking to a friend I have been informed that this score is very low even with all the settings turned up. I confirmed this by running it at 640 by 480 with no settings enabled or the lowest values and only getting a 4467. troubleshooting, I installed the new drivers from Gainward (the Geforce 3 Ti 200 is a Ti450 Golden Sample card from them) which include the latest nvidia reference drivers (version 28.32). When I restarted the comp and tried to run 3dMark, however, it gave me an error reading "3dMark 2001 requires a Direct x 8 compatable 3d accelerator" and suggested I get an older version of 3dMark. Any suggestions? I am running Windows Xp.

Also, other related issues:
Any way to change the update driver crap for hardware in Windows? Self-executing driver updates such as Nvidia stuff and Via stuff is a pain in the butt to get Windows to recognize because it doesn't detect the file when you hit "Update Driver" in the Windows way of updating drivers and when it self executes windows doesn't recognize the new driver. And I thought AutoWizards were supposed to be helpful!

Any help is most appreciated especially with the first issue.

You need to have DirectX 8 installed before you run 3DMark 2001. You can get it at Microsoft's website.

If you are running anything in the background when you are testing, it will lower your results. Before you run 3DMark, do a ctrl-alt-delete and end task everything but Explorer and Systray.

Most of the drivers are zipped files that self extract. To be sure they install, open the exe files with Winzip and extract them to an empty, temp directory on your hard disk. Then, to upgrade your vid drivers, right click on your desktop, select settings/advanced/adapter, select change and when it asks for the driver select browse, then navigate to the directory you extracted the new drivers and click OK.

Good luck...................

You don't need to worry about Direct X 8 since it comes with winXP. You can just run the setup program for the Detanator drivers. I would go with the 23.11 drivers if I were you. I've had the most luck with them when running a GeForce 3.

To fix your 3Dmark problem...

1) go into the DirectX setup program.. I believe it's named dxdiag.exe.
2) Click on the Display tab..
3) Disable Direct3D acceleration
4) Exit the program and reboot
5) Go back into dxdiag.exe
6) re-enable Direct3D acceleration

done

<< i'm erik's "friend" that helped him.. he said that he couldnt find a directx 8 version for xp. we tried to win2000 version, but it wasn't recognized. without any directx installation, there was non-recognized (in response to it being packaged with xp). so we couldnt figure out the problem..

WinXP has DirectX 8.1 built into it... just follow the steps I provided in my first post and it will be fixed. Trust me... it's happened to me and I tell the same thing to other people when it happens to them. This problem is actually fairly common..
