Need help wireless adapter probs

My friends PC is in his basement and his wireless router is upstairs, using a USB wireless adapter, I was able to connect him to the network with low signal. Anyways he took the computer over to his friends for a while and finally a couple of days ago we hooked it all back up at his house. So when trying to connect to the network The windows zero wireless program says that I am currently not set up to connect to infrastructure networks. So I go back and check and in the advanced settings and It is supposed to connect to any network. So just to be safe I click infrastructure only mode but for when I close and click OK it tells me that some of my wireless settings have not been saved? Anyways I tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling without any luck. In the network utility that came with the device it shows that it is constantly scanning through channels 1 to 11. At this time I brought my laptop over to check if I could get a connection from the network and I sure could. I tried plugging in the wireless router into my laptop which informed that the device has failed and could not connect. This lead me to believe that it was defective. So I ordered a new one of a different model that had good reviews. Anyways I install the drivers etc... and same problem with it saying I am not set up to connect to this type of network. Anyways I am at the end of the line . It is definitely a windows problem, am thinking of just reinstalling XP since he has nothing important on his PC anyways.

Try just using the client utility provided with the card. I personally can't stand the zero configuration stuff.

On the properties in network control panel you should be able to uncheck "use windows to manage wireless connections.

Well it is a Global statement, and like most Global Statements, it is reflecting mental status rather the technology.

There is No general 3rd party replacement (beside the Behemoth Boingo).

Therefore, you must the utility that comes with the card. Many of these utilities are not better than WZC.

There are also a lot of situations that using WZC is much more comfortable than using the Brand utility.

When you are on the road and dependent on Hot Spots it is much easier the use WZC.

The main problem is that WZC is so comfortable to use that users get connected automatically at the first use and do not bother to spend few minutes to learn how to use/configure WZC. At the first sign of trouble Panics takes over and frantic posting seems to be the answer.

at least none that are free and designed for home use...

Juniper Odyssey Access Client and the 3eTI WLAN Client are very robust.

Im not really panicking, I normally have had nothing against the zero config util other than it constantly changes my order of preferred networks around and connects me to networks that I don't want to connect too.

This problem however is causing quite a bit of trouble for my friend and I as you can see from my above post.
