Need Help: WinXP Doesn't See 2nd Device On 2nd IDE Channel

Last Friday I picked up one of the 80GB Seagate drives on sale at Fry's and finally decided to use it as a second drive in my system. My set-up is like this:

mobo: MSI K7T266 Pro2 w/latest bios
primary master: Maxtor 46GB HDD
primary slave: BTC 56X CD-ROM
secondary master: Lite-On 24x10x40x CD-RW
secondary slave: Seagate 80GB HDD

Up until this weekend I hadn't tried to use any secondary slave devices. Now I run into this: the bios detects all the devices just fine. Various Windows boot discs (ME, 98SE, etc.) see the Seagate in the slave position; so does WinXP's set-up process.

I've reversed the CD-RW and Seagate drive in master and slave positions, tried different IDE cables, verified the jumper settings, etc. Everything is good to go until I get into Windows XP. Then, whichever device is in the secondary slave position disappears. (The "Add New Hardware Wizard" doesn't find it, either.)

Does it work in DOS?

If so then it is an OS issue.

Right. So what next? Move my thread to the Operating Systems forum?

So do they work in DOS? I have seen Adaptec/Roxio kill IDE channels in the OS.

For grins & giggle and testing, I take it that everything was working w/o the Segate in the secondary slave, and everything else you listed stayed the same connecting. If so what about unconnecting the Lite On, and just hooking up the Segate to the 2nd Master just to see if it works.

Or just hook up the Seagate all by itself and see if WinXP will install on that.......

Even though you said you checked jumpers, check again on the Lite-On and Segate.

1. Works in DOS.

2. Everything works, except whatever is on the second IDE channel's slave. At the moment the Seagate is the secondary master and the Lite-On is the secondary slave. So, right now. the Seagate works fine and the Lite-On doesn't show up in Device Manager, Disk Management (Administrative Tasks), etc. Note, however, that everything shows up when I run Auto Hard Drive Detect in the bios.

I haven't had time to pursue the problem, buit I have an internal Zip drive that shows up in the BIOS but not in XP... I am curious to see where this thread goes...

This is weird! I switched the jumpers on the two devices that are on IDE 2 (the Seagate HDD and the Lite-On CD-RW) to "cable select."

First I set the cable with the HDD as the master and the CD-RW as the slave. During the POST, the bios correctly identifies both. Once WinXP is fully loaded I only have the HDD -- no CD-RW.

Then I shut down and reverse the cable settings so the CD-RW is the master and the HDD is the slave. During the POST the bios again correctly identifies both as the master and slave respectively. Once WinXP is fully loaded I only have the CD-RW -- no HDD.

under device manager check the ide channels to make sure both master and slave are enabled. it would be possible to disable one or the other so that the bios detects them but not the OS.

TheWart: Thank you!!! As soon as I read your post I had one of those "V8 moments." A couple of months ago I changed that setting to "none" while tweaking my system.

I just reset it to "Auto" and everything is cool. Thanks again! :D

(Now please excuse me while I go kick myself in the ass a few times.)
