hey..im running an asus Kt7 mobo with a duron 750...i used to run winXP pro on the machine..i just formatted my harddrive and tried to reinstall winXP but it cant install all of the files. aorund the 20% mark it says it cant install a file...usually a .dll file. if i skip it...it'll copy more files and then stop again...i tried my friend's copy of WindowsXP pro also and the same thing happens..eventually it hits an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen...does anyone know why this happens? the same thing happens when i install winME and try to install winXP as an upgrade...winME installs fine though. Any ideas? thanks -Tony

I've had this happen a couple times (of the 100 xp installs... damn MS is buggy). I remeber seeing the specific error. If it's coming up with those errors, you're probably using a CD-R, and either the files are really not there, or it's having a little trouble reading them. In any case, you can't really skip any of the files. In my case, every time it gave me a problem, I took the cd out, blew on it, replaced it and selected retry. Worked fine (though I had to do that about 8 times).

Seen this with burned copies of XP also. Try switching to another cd and hit retry when it can't find a file in one cd. You might have to switch back and forth between CD's a couple times.

could it have something to do with my ide wires or something? cuz it works fine when i put my harddrive into my friend's computer...i tried his cdrom on my setup previously and it didnt work...thanks for the help..

i have a 256, and 2 128 sticks...it installed fine with one of the 128's...how do i know which ram is bad since it starts up and shows all of the ram? because it still crashes easily when i have all of it in there...thanks for the advice

When I get OS file install errors after a standard format, I usually find that a Low Level format will take care of this problem. If you need to get a low level formatter, Maxtor has one to download off of their website. Although it is for Maxtor HHD's, I've used it on many other brand HHD's with no problem. The low level formatter will detect your HHD with no problem.
