Ok
I have chinese windows 98 SE, so I'll try to translate to the best of my ability

My computer been going slow today, sorta lags once in a while, so I right click on my computers, go to the place where you check system resource, underneath i see couple of messages, it basically states that windows cannot recongnize/use config.sys and autoexec.bat, and that it will use ms-dos mode. and this mode it states has low system performance.

Is there anyway I can solve this problem?
Please lemme know if additional information is needed

I have a P4 1.8ghz
256mb ram
radeon 7000 Video card

Thanks a lot

Have you tried replacing autoexec.bat and config.sys with the backup ones that windows creates? I can't remember the names but they're in the root directory, the extension is just different.

Ya i have tried using the backup ones, doesn't seem to work. I also checked the current config.sys and autoexec.bat and they seem to look normal

Are you running any msdos programs? If not delete them.

Or go to start, run and type in msconfig.
Put a dot next to selective startup and unselect config.sys, autoexec.bat (you can always reselect them later if needed)

Then unselect the bottom option "Load Startup Group Items" and click on startup tab in top right corner.
Find and select scanregistry & systray. Everything else is up to you, for example your virus scanning software etc.

I tried disabling them as well as unselecting as many items from the start up programs, still doesn't work. I think the problem with not being able to recongnize config.sys is utilizing it's himem.sys? cause i see that in the config.sys, so.... any other possible solutions?

Thanks for all the helps so far

9x doesn't depend on the config.sys to load himem.sys. In fact, 9x doesn't really depend on these files for anything other than reverse compatibility. The chances are you are being forced into compatibility mode as a result of of a problem with a hard disk driver, like the one specific to your motherboard/chipset has become corrupted and Windows is substituting the old standard MS-DOS driver.

Is the message saying your hard disk has to run in ms-dos compatibility mode? text

AKA is right, if you're not running any dos programs in windows, then you won't need to be loading config.sys or autoexec.bat

Is there anyway to check if my motherboard/cpu chip driver has been corrupted? I checked my HD controller and it looks normal, no red/yellow exclamation marks
