need help: Win2K and SCSI drive

ok, i have a problem.

here's what i have:
tekram 390u2b
seagate barracuda

problem is that the drive is detected in startup bios but i don't see the drive in Win2K. is there something i'm missing? do i need to format (and how would i do that)?

i check the hardware settings and the drive is there. no conflicts with scsi id either.

any help is appreciated. thanks

Ok, i'm assuming you are trying to install win2k with that SCSI card and drive as your main HDD. What you need to do is once you booted of your win2k cd-rom and you see that blue screen hit F6 a couple of times. (or whatever it says at the bottom of the screen when it asks you if you have any additional mass storage devices). Along the setup, Win2k will ask you for the SCSI drivers and you provide them and if it likes em 😉, it should see your seagate.

hmm. actually no. i want the scsi as a serving drive or burning drive.

the tekram does recognize it in the bootup.

but for some reason i don't see it in windows. the systems|hardware tab does show the seagate under hard drives. when i use windows explorer, i don't see it.

puzzling...

no i haven't done anything with it. i ran the seagate diagnostics (in ms-dos) but it didn't recognize anything. i tried to flash the tekram bios but the .exe file would not execute under Win2K dos prompt. i tried setting up a boot disk but it seems like win2k doesn't have the option like win98. hmm. i guess i'll take another crack at it in the morning.

thx urbantechie for helping me so far.

ok, it's not win2k

i tried to format with the tekram setup (during startup) and it couldn't do it.

it's ok to use LVD cables for non-LVD drives right? i hope so. well, i may have to take this into the peripherals forum.

hmm if the sucker's not partitioned and formatted, i don't think any MS OS would see it. try partition magic 5.01 (with win2k support) and see if that'll show the drive.

this doesn't apply to ya since you won't be booting from the drive,
but don't use F6 during win2k install with 3rd party drivers -- read the tekram website, that'll freeze and screw over your entire install. i learned the hard way 🙂 instead, allow win2k to install on the hdd thru the tekram card using its default symbios drivers, then update to the latest tekram ones from their site
