Must be xpsp1 or greater to recognize a drive larger than 130 GB.
I'm sure there's workarounds, but I've never used any. I just upgrade.
 

You need to patch the registry.
I had to do it for my maxtor drives. I'm not sure if the patch is the same for all drives, but I believe it is.

The size limitation is 137GB.

thanks, this was the problem. I need to add a reg value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1
