Are you talking about Christopher Columbus?

If so, Columbus was Italian, not Spanish. The King and Queen of Spain financed the whole voyage.

Dibs beat me to it. Columbus was from Genoa, if I remember correctly (Genova, in Italian), but could not find financing in Italy so he went to Spain. Yes, it is Genoa because I remember the statue they have in his honor there though there is also one prominently displayed in Barcelona.

Heh -- while I attempt to load the site with this broadband 7Kbps connection (I'm not kidding, unfortunately), three other people respond. :)
