Need help w/ my TV Tuner

I got an ATI TV Wonder for Christmas and I've got a problem with it. When I plug in the cable straight from the wall, I get nothing but static and distortion. However, I can run the cable through the VCR and then from the VCR to the computer and I get the picture, even though it is slightly grainy. Any suggestions?
