My girlfriend recently bought a laptop from Dell. As mentioned it's an Inspiron 1521 (AMD 690) with the ATI Radeon x1270 graphics and Vista basic 32-bit. The other day I noticed her screen appreared blurry and sure enough it's set to 1024x768 instead of its native widescreen resolution. The culprit appears to be a malfunctioning driver for the x1270.
When I look up the 1270 in device manager it says that the driver is installed, but windows failed to initialize it (error code 37). So I tried just reinstalling the driver after uninstall and a driver cleaner run. Now this is where I start to go nuts. Every time I try to install a driver for this 1270, it winds up the same. Installed correctly, windows can't initialize. I have tried probably 12 different drivers, even those from other model laptops with the same x1270. None of them will fix this. Also, AMD's own site says that it does not support mobility drivers for Vista!? WTF!? The AMD site pretty much just tells you to go to your laptop manufacturer's site...great, so Dell's file set doesn't work. Same result. Shows up as the right graphics chipset, just won't initialize the driver.
Any ideas?
