Need help w/ HD "disappearance"

Hi all,

First of all, wonderful forums, glad I stumbled onto these today.

I am having trouble with my HDD. About a month ago, I built my first comp, and was having good luck with it until yesterday. I put in it a Maxtor 5400 60 GB for MP3s and other files, and a Maxtor 7200 60 GB for running programs and applications. Yesterday, after leaving it running with virtually no activity all weekend, I rebooted, and suddenly, Windows said that my 54 wasn't there. It is still in the BIOS, but not in Windows. I have already tried searching for it through Add New Hardware, have tried it on my IDE cable that runs my CD ROM, even tried it in another computer, but to no avail. I am running out of ideas. Someone told me that it may be the secondary HDD controller on my MOBO, but I am not sure what to do with that information. I am pretty computer savvy, but wouldn't consider myself a Grade A "techie".

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gump

check the master/slave setup, usually the bios will fix a misjumper but maybe windows is getting confused on it.

If you tried it in another system and it still wouldn't show up in windows even though the bios shows it then it may be toast. I would try "using a bigger hammer" so to speak :Q What I mean is it could be phyisically froze up and a mild thump might free it up. I would only do this as a last resort ofcourse, but since the firmware talks to the mobo but it doesn't seem to be acessible..........

Thanks for the advice. I can feel it running, so I am pretty sure it isn't froze up. I have the jumpers set on cable select, so that shouldn't be a problem, should it? One more thing I should add, I had a brand new 30 GB laying here, so I opened that up, and put it in the same spot I had the 54, and nothing. That is why I am so confused.

Thanks for the help, past and future.

Gump

Try making the 5400rpm drive the slave via the jumper config and see if that works.

Punisher,

Just tried that, but didn't change anything. Can anyone tell me about the secondary HD controller? I have heard of it, but have no idea how to test it, or even where it is. I am at my wits end about this. I am thinking that reformatting is the last resort, and my only hope, but I am picking up XP in a few days, and wanted to wait until then to try the "cure-all".

Thanks for the help so far, and if anyone else has some suggestions (besides a hammer, which actually sounds very tempting right now) please don't hesitate to answer. I am desperate.

Thanks,

Gump
