I just registered so I hope this works out ok.

Around a year ago, little less I bought a PNY 6800 GT. It worked great for about a year. Around a week or so ago it started crashing, repeatedly, in games. I tested it with wow, 3dmark, and ut2k4. Essentially, the game would run for 2-3 mins, then the screen would blur up. The music would continue in the background a bit and I had to reboot.

I noticed that the temperature seemed hot, so i tested the card with the rthdribl demo, it went up to 115 C then crashed. Is that too hot? It wasnt even close to that hot before I dont think.

I don't know why this changed but I need help, thanks to everyone in advance.

That's a really really high temperature. Maybe you should check the card out...maybe the fan stopped working?? Either that or it's possible the heatsink isn't making enough contact with the core

While videocards get pretty damn hot with no problems... 115C is way to high..

A typical 6800GT will run from 70-90C loaded..

If i remember correctly, in the nVidia driver options, the temp. threshold is 120C.. You are bordering that for sure..

Possible RMA, or try like ryan said and reseat the heatsink.. Or blow it out if it's filled with dust!

another thing you might need is case fans, an intake and exhaust, if you dont already have 1. And if you do it wont hurt to add a couple more to help reduce heat. Sometimes the drivers can cause problems too, so make sure you update them also.

Fan is spinning. Perhaps the heatsink is shifted off the core, but I don't know how to properly remove it, nor do I want to void my warranty.

I've blown it out already, both by mouth (bad idea!) and using an air can thingy.

The case ambient temp without the GPU running (in 2d mode) is 40c, pretty low AFAIK, I already have several casefans.

well in that case, send it in for warranty work if you still have it. if you dont have warranty on it anymore then removing the fan is most likely what needs to be done. Can you take a pic of your card close up san email it to me? reason i ask is cuz i had an ati 9000 pro and i had that problem. what i did is took the fan off and bought a bigger 1 for it. after i did that it worked fine and the temp was fine. i still have that card for back up hehe....... ssdd1974@mail.com is my addy....

change ur fan immediately....ur card is severely overheating....
get a Zalman VF700ALCU...DO NOT RUN ANYMORE ON THAT CARD UNLESS U HAVE UR PROBLEM SOLVED or else u would end up with a burnt up card
