Need help w/ enabling hibernation

K, i've got a dell inspiron 1100 laptop from a few years back and im trying to enable the hibernation feature in win xp pro (sp2). I don't recall if I've ever been able to enable this feature successfully. Why trying to enable in the power options menu, I receive a message saying "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." I've tried closing all programs and detaching all external devices without any luck. I've also tried restarting in safe mode but that wouldn't work. There is enough memory so that isn't the prob. I've got two partitions on this drive and a third is being used as an EISA configuration. Does anyone know why I am having such an issue? TIA

The 3rd partition is a utility partition that all Dells come with. When you boot up the computer there's an option to run some diagnostics, and the diagnostic utilities are stored in that partition. You don't need the partition, but it doesn't hurt anything to have it.

No idea what your problem is. Do a Google search on that error and maybe you'll get lucky. You might need to resort to a clean install.

On the other hand I see little need for hibernation. I disable it on my laptops. Standby mode is fine and either I'll turn my laptop off or the battery will run down. I don't walk away from a laptop running on batteries and leave anything open that isn't saved.
