Need help w/ Cell Phones

Ok I need to get myself a cell phone. I live in Atlanta, GA and basically...I don't need many minutes per month, maybe 300 or so, but I do want one of those plans where you get free roaming and free long distance. Free night/weekend minutes would be good too, but that's not really the highest priority.

I also need recommendations on the physical phone.

AT&T has some nice plans, only been w/ them for a month tho... so far it's been good (well, technically my mom).

She has a nokia 8260, and boy is it nice 🙂 Just makes me wanna get my own... altho.. i have no use for one 🙂
 
AT&T drops calls alot in MA, but it might be different in GA. Go to eopinions.com and see which has the best coverage.
 
AT&T sucks here in the Phila, PA area. A friend of mine uses them and is always dealing with dropped calls, etc. I've been very happy with Cellular One, but I am not sure if they are an option in your area.
 
This site helped me out quite a bit. It first determines which plans are available in your area, and then compares all available plans for that area in regard to price, minutes, etc.

Okay I did it. Just got a plan from Bellsouth here in Atlanta...got the 350 minute plan, I can always come back and change if I want more minutes/month. And I splurged and got the 8260 phone. 🙂

I have heard that the best program you can get in Cell phones is the one in Sprint. I think it is perfect for you. I am in the same situation, and I am choosing Sprint under your same circunstances
 
I wasn't happy with Bellsouth AT ALL for the two years that I had em here in Atlanta. The quality of the call was never too hot. Don't ask why I kept em for two years, I'm dumb like that. Changed to Sprint in August and I'm as happy as a clam. 250 minutes/month + LD + wireless web for $30/month with 1 year contract. I coulda gotten 250 nights and weekends, but I don't use the phone that much so I opted for the wireless web for the gadget factor.

Maybe you'll have better luck with Bellsouth than I did.
 
Hopefully I will, but I only got a 6 mo. service agreement, so I can deal with them for six months and then if I'm not happy I'll try Sprint or AT&T.
 
I was reading an article about wireless service. I do not recall the author, but he said that rates are going to take a huge tumble in 6 months or less.
 
Sprint has the worst coverage because they use their own cell towers only. They advertise that they built their own network, and indeed they did. But, it' s biting them in the ass. They don't have enough of their own towers. They aren't engaged in any reciprocal agreements with other cellular carriers. In my area, that means a buttload of "black holes" in their coverage areas.
 
I have had good luck with Alltel, my plan covers my home state (Ohio) as well as western Pa., W.Va., and areas of Va. and SE Mi. I haven't ever had a problem with dropped calls and I pay $30 per month for 200 minutes. (The rates are less for "local" plans as opposed to the "regional" plan I use.) As for the specific phone, I have a Motorola SC3160, which is less flashy than a lot of the phones offered but was the only one for less than $200 in my area that had a silent mode (vibrate and no tones when the keys are depressed) which was a "war goal" for me, as I am often in places where I don't want the stupid thing ringing and interrupting everyone. The phone has been great, no problems with people on the other end of the line getting very quiet reception (a frequent problem with my father's Samsung), and there is more than enough memory space for programming numbers into the phone.
