I work for a firm that wants some of its employees to be able to work from home and access the work network using VPN. One of the employees that is trying to get set up has Roadrunner for her provider and her newly installed cable modem has the ip changing every 3 or so minutes...which our IT guy is saying kills her ability to use VPN. Are there any serivces out there (like no-ip) that would help the situation other than paying Roadrunner $70 a month for static IP?

Thanks

chaging every 3 minutes? thats just crazy...i say she needs to call up roadrunner and ask why it is changing so much and say it is affecting her browsing ability...usually DHCP servers refresh every 24 hours not every 3 minutes...

and yeah no dyn-ip service would help you out since its her connecting to you...if it was your IP that was chaging than maybe, but since its her connecting to you there isn't really much that can be done.

My RoadRunner IP doesn't change very often - maybe every few weeks or even months. If I put a new device (different MAC address) on the cable modem it will change each time but if I just leave my Linksys attached I'll go months without a change.

ive used a Nortel VPN gateway and Nortel Contivity VPN client software for home and laptop users with dynamic IPs... worked like charm. i dont know what you guys use for your VPN access, but dynamic no-ip like service might be the way to go (as mentioned).
