Sorry if this had been posted, I searched and didn't find anything.

A co-worker just got Pacbell DSL with their self install system. Anyways they asked me to help them with their network. They had bought a 3 COM DSL router already. So I went and took a look at what they are dealing with and found that their DSL modem plugs into their computer via USB. I have dealt with the standard cat 5 modems before that plug into the routers wan port, but I've never dealt with a DSL Modem plugging in USB into the computer. Is there a way for me to still send out the DSL to the router since their is no Cat 5 data cable?

Thanks

ISPs usually offer one of three Setting:

1. External Cable/DSL Modem with Ethernet Network Card.
2. Internal PCI Modem.
3. External USB Modem.

The BEST solution concerning Flexibility, Speed, Sharing, Networking, is by FAR the First.

External Cable/DSL Modem with Ethernet Network Card, combined with Cable/DSL Router is the most popular sharing set up.

If the first one is not available. Internal PCI is faster then USB.

However, if you don't have a spare IRQ, or don't want to open the computer USB will do.

If you got stuck with one of the latter two, you can not use Cable/DSL Router to share.

You can share with good Software NAT like Sygate.

1. ask pacbell to exchange the usb modem to ethernet modem.
2. dsl/cable sharing router for usb modem.
3. just use the router as switch and software NAT program to share the internet.
