I currently play battlefield 2 and my clan member said that one of the reasons i lag sometimes is cause i have a PATA drives. He said when he went to SATA he was perfect.
Currently I have :

AMD 64 3000+
Ati X800pro agp
K8V-SE Deluxe.
WD 80 gig ata 133. - has programs on it and music
WD 40 gig ata 133 - has windows and other things on it.
1 Gig of Corsair Value pc3200

Now ive heard that theres been problems running SATA on this motherboard, i am not sure. Does anyone know.

Im thinking of getting this drive

Will this work with my motherboard and what will i have to do to install it. I have minimum knowlege about SATA and RAID. I plan on using just a single SATA drive!

Thanks

he doesn't know what he's talking about. the difference in speed between SATA and PATA is minimal at best (performance-wise, that is. on paper only are they much faster). if he got a 10K RPM raptor, that might be different but still. your gpu should be fine so you'd benefit a lot more from buying an extra 1GB of RAM. defrag, set your pagefile to a different drive than your OS, and set pagefile min&max sizes to the same thing. all this will help A LOT more than simply going PATA -> SATA. hope this helps.

he also said that bf2 often take files from your harddrive so a sata drive would load it alot faster. also can u give me more descriptive directions on the page file thing?

i have windwos on the 40 and bf2 on the 80 gig

PATA and SATA drives have the same physical limitations, the drives can barely use ATA100 let alone sata150. If he went to raptor it would help some, but thats because they are 10k rpm, not because they are SATA. The page file is hard drive spaced that is used as temporary RAM. If the game you are running is paging often, it will cause slowdowns, because the speed of hard drive access is a lot slower than that of RAM.

Play a game of BF2, look in the performance tab of task manager, at the section that says commit charge. If the peak is higher than 1gig, then you are paging while playing the game, and it would benifit from upping the memory to 2gb.

I has slowdowns in star wars galaxies when the page file was being used, and I have 2 raptors in raid-0. I upped the memory to 2gb, and the slowdowns went away.

I'm thinking that he was really experiencing one of two things:
1) he changed something else in going from PATA to SATA and that is really what made the difference. Hardware, drivers, software, something.
2) He is on crack

SATA has nice thin connectors and is cleaner to install, but performance differences between the two are minimal at best.

Your friend sounds like he plays video games too much. Tell him to do some research and get some correct information. Cause he has no clue what he is talking about.

EX: http://reviews.pimprig.com/motherboards...8vse_deluxe_a64_motherboard.php?page=2 top paragraph can somone simplify that for me?

my motherboard has a similar limitation when all 3 dimms are full. i just sold my 2x512MB sticks and bought 2x1GB. made all my BF2 stuttering problems go away.

about the pagefile, you have BF2 and windows installed on different drives so that makes it a little more complicated. i would do this, tho. right-click MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES. click the ADVANCED tab and PERFORMANCE SETTINGS. on the new window that pops up, click ADVANCED and CHANGE.

here is where you change your pagefile properties. why don't you tell me what drive your current pagefile is on and what it's min&max sizes are?
