Hello to all,

I am finally upgrading my servers motherboard, ram, powervsupply, and processor(I had this since fathers day, p4 3ghz 800mhz-fsb)

heres what I want in a board, not looking to overclock, the system will be running all day, at least 5 pci slots, 1000mbps ethernet(important for my network), serial ata(for the future),and 1394(not that important),and 8x agp

1. Now I don't know what motherboard to get, I have been looking at a lot of them but I have narrowed it down to 2 for now, asus p4p800-e deluxe »www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp.. don't know If I really want this a few bad reviews about the RAID controls

and intel d865perlk »www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp..
I like this one except for the few who said they received bad ones out the box.

My ears are open to suggestions, anyone?

2. Good memory to go with it, going for 1gb but will start with 512 for now(because of money), it has to have a life time warranty

3.power supply will have to support 3-4 hard drives and 3 dvd drives and a floppy, looking for quiet and powerful but not power hungry, I might buy as early as Sunday so I will be on the hunt this weekend

thanks in advance,

you need to fix the links above so we can see the newegg parts your talking about.

by the way, if your wanting a very powerfull/fast/stable server you should check out opteron. i have a couple dual opteron systems that are the best servers ive ever owned.

the above board has 5 pci slots, 10/100/1000 lan, 4sata ports. i used this board in a build a couple months ago, the guy uses it in his machine shop. (he makes military and private sector custom parts for aircraft, etc) he loves the system.

but if your looking for something a bit more cost effective you might want to pass on the opteron and just get a dif board with an athlon64

as for powersupply, you cant go wrong with an enermax or antec (personally i prefer enermax) the enermax 360w will actually run my dual opteron systems, but just to be on the safe side i use enermax 460w

for ram, if your going with a server type board you will need ecc/reg ram, i like neweggs buffalo pc3200 ecc/reg 512mb stick (2 sticks for 1gb, or 4 sticks for 2gb total) they cost around $117 last time i bought

but if its a mainstream board you will want pc3200 unbuffered/non-parity. some people will recommend the really high $$ stuff, but since your not gonna overclock i wouldnt get ocz, or hyperx, or XMS stuff... again i would probably just get the buffalo 512mb pc3200 unbuffered/non-parity (not sure of the price, but i think its a bit cheaper then the ecc/reg)

the aboves boards would be great if your looking for something a little more cost effective

it still has all the stuff your needing, the 5 pci slots, 10/100/1000 lan, sata ports, firewire.

with this board you could use a socket754 athlon64 (which would bcost less then an opteron) and with this one you can also use the less expensive unbuffered/non-parity ram.

the best part is that even though it would cost less then a P4 it would still be just as stable/compatable, and it would actually be faster :D

I already have the p4 3ghz processor

I dont want to spend over $130 for the motherboard
