I am a game junkie that needs help upgrading my computer. I play mostly 3D intensive games like Everquest, Quake, Ghost Recon, and (when it comes out) Unreal Tournament 2003.

I currently have a:

1.2 Ghz Athlon
Aurora Motherboard
512 MB DDR PC 2100 RAM
40 GB 7200 RPM IDE HD
Geforce 3

running on a Windows ME platform.

I am considering the following upgrades: Windows XP, more RAM, *Geforce 4 TI 4600*, faster Athlon, and a better HD. I am limited to spending $500. I really want the Geforce 4 but want your thoughts on (1) whether any of these upgrades will make a difference and, (2) which upgrades will give me the best performance gain.

Thanks for all your help.

Aside from your OS and assuming your GF3 is a true GF 3 and not a Ti-200, you're set! I wouldn't change a thing for only 500, other than maybe getting a bigger monitor (you dind't mention what kind/size you had). I have bascially the same set up and my PC smokes all games I play (WC3, JK2: Jedi Outcast, MOHAA, D2, Etc...) Honestly, if you must upgrade seomthing and are looking for the best performace boost, you'd be better off saving a little money and buying a whole new set up. If you're a stickler and decide YOU MUST, here's my recommendations in order:

1 OS upgrade to either 2k or XP (your choice, if you're ok with a less mature OS take XP)

2 CPU (XP 2200 if your mobo can take it)

3 GF4 Ti 4600

Thanks dude.

I decided on the following: (1) Windows Xp, (2) Geforce 4 TI 4400, (3) 19 inch monitor, and (4) Athlon 2000 XP.

It cost me $770, a little more than the $500 I was willing to spend but screw it. And, yes, I HAD to upgrade. My wife would not let me buy a new computer and I just can't stand being behind the curve.

Again, thanks for you help.
