Need help updating Linux (USB modem, kernel, xfree)

I've just installed Suse 7.0 after giving up on Slackware 7.1. Now I need to update my kernel and download other various updates/upgrades. But first, I need to get my USB modem working. I added/edited some config files with the line:
USB_DRIVERS="usb-acm" (acm, amc, something like that)

After rebooting, Linux recognizes the USB modem(clicking sounds and a lit LED). Now how do I set it up as my modem? Right now I'm using a 33.6 ISA modem, until I can figure out how to get my 56K working. Do I have to remove the 33.6 before I can setup the 56k?

Also, if anyone can point me to a good, current help file on compiling a kernel. Also, any hints on getting my GF2 MX working? I think that's it, thanks to anyone that can help my Linux experience be a good one!
