Need help "unlinking" previous owner's iTunes account from iPod

I bought my dad a used iPod Touch and he says he's unable to use it because it's still "linked" to the previous owner's account. Here's what he sent me:

I have been struggling with an issue I cannot resolve. This iPod was purchased from an individual who did not remove his iTunes account info. When I plugged it into my computer, iTunes came up and all my music was attached credited to the previous owner named "Eli". It is now on his account and not one that relates to me. I called the Apple help line and they said I would have to purchase a service contract for them to look at the situation. If I had Eli's iTunes password I might be able to do something, but Apple is obviously not going to give me that.

Any ideas?

No, but I checked and thought there was no data at all on the device so I assumed that had been done.

Also make sure that you don't load a backup to the iPod after you're done with a restore. Set it up as NEW DEVICE.
