Someone who desires to be your friend, desires something you have to offer. Friendships are often simply self-serving relationships.
 
Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Essentially, 'they may appear to be friendly, but watch out' is my interpretation.

Edit: I like djheater's interpretation better.
 
i like combining neurorelay's interpretation with djheater's....
that each potential friend may only be interested in friendship as to later have the chance at 'biting you' to quench their thirst (stabbing you in the back to take something of yours)
 
A potential friend is a potential enemy. Just as a hand may be open in greeting or closed for fighting, a smile may come back to bite you.
 
if someone want to be ur freind, they bite something. if they simile, you see thier teeth and wish u had gone the the dentist
 
If someone wants to be your friend, make sure to think of why they would want to d oso.
