Just built my "new" (Athlon 650) system yesterday, installed WinXP. Everything seem to work properly, except I can not download a thing! I am able to connect to the Net (in fact I am typing this on the new machine) thru my Linksys router which, in turn, is connected to my DSL modem. The first thing I did following the installation is I went to MS website and scanned for XP updates. However, I am unble to download a single file. Thinking it was a glitch on the MS site, I went to download.com and tried to get several utilities with same results, all my download connections time-out without downloading a single byte. I logged in on my second machine, and downloaded files without a problem, which took my router and DSL modem out of the loop of possible bottlenecks. I am really at loss here and would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance. Pavel

After I installed the "December 13th Security Update" (the one for MIME type mismatches) for WinXP from Windows Update I could no longer download any files at all using Internet Explorer. Uninstalled that update and it works again. That's fine quality programming from Redmond.

I don't have XP myself, but my roommate has trouble. Do you know if I can check somewhere if he has that update installed (possibly auto-install?)

Check in Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs. I'm pretty sure it shows up there.
