Hi,

We have five dual Xeon 2.4G computers with each one having only one harddrive. The computers usually have 2.0 load all the time. Now, we need to buy a cheap UPS for them. Could anyone be kindly enough to answer my questions?

1. How strong is the current at the boot time for one computer?
2. How much power does one computer need running at full speed?

Does anyone have recommandations?

Thank you very much!

Semi.

Without knowing much about those computers, or being able to estimate their power usage, I can only offer a few recommendations:
  • Consider using two or three UPSes to distribute the load of the computers over multiple smaller units and avoid a single point of failure.
  • Also please consider using the right forum if you want to post another UPS-related question.

Most UPS' are made for home usage...therefor comp (single proc btw), printer, scanner, monitor all plugged into one...
To make it so 5 can boot of one...or even 2 to boot off one is really goign to be pushing the limits of any consumer availible UPS out there...
I'd say get each machine a 500-700VA rated one and you should be alright...it loks like youd be spending a ton to get a 1400VA one that would really one be good for 2 comps at a time...so in other words a 2 proc machine which has a load going is going to need at least 500VA to give you enough time to shutdown but 700VA probobly to be on the safe side.
Really though with 5 machines i think a really good surge protector is all you should really look into...if your not running probs that backup data already in that sorta setting a UPS isn't going to help you that much...

For under $120 (and a Sam's Club membership) you would probably do well with 2 or 3 of these babies. One is enough for both rigs in my sig as well as the 2 19" CRTs. Since the CPUs aren't overclocked and you're likely not using 5 CRTs (are you?) this UPS might fit the bill. Unfortunately, its Power Chute software is limited to shutting down one PC in case of emergency.
