need help starting a website

rudeguy

Lifer
hey guys I am looking to start up a little website, only problem is I dont know a whole lot about the web portion of it...just wondering if anyone out there is willing to give me some pointers

Do you have a domain (www.rudeguy.com) registered yet?

Do you have a webhost provider?

What is your monthly or annual budget for a webhost provider?

Is this "little website" for personal/hobby, family, business or other use?

You could be lame and go to geocities or angelfire. Well its free, so I guess its not that lame. Do you know how to code HTML? I would recomend one of the SAMS teach yourself HTML in 24 hours books. Or something of that nature.

EDIT: whoops, misspeled Angelfire... lol

its going to be a business website so angelfire and crappocities are out...and the budgetting end i dont really know what to expect. I can code in html no problem...i am a puter nerd....so yah...i just have what i think is a good idea and some start up money....just need to know what steps to take and what mistakes i should watch of for.....really do appreciate you guys helpin out...when the site makes it big i will make sure to buy you all somethin nice and shiny

and if you have a forum, make sure you get an intelligent excessive line break detector installed.

Don't worry about a sarcasm detector, though. Members with no sense of humor make those unnecessary....

First you need a website to play around with so you know what you want to do, questions, design, etc

1) Register a domain for your business with NameCheap.com
2) Get webhosting, this largely depends on your budget but I would recommend AddAction.net for $9.95 for 6 months (go into your Profile and turn on your private messages)
3) Fool around.

Few things in webhosting or eCommerce are "hassle free" just avoid webhost providers who aren't established, reliable and if they offer "UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH" run far far away screaming at the top of your lungs.

The tough part is estimating how much webspace and bandwidth you'll need, most webhosts will allow you to upgrade or downgrade your hosting plan. Maybe start out small and gradually increase as business pours in.

A good question would be what exactly is the purpose of this website for your business? I didn't see it asked already.

Do you plan on selling on the internet? Is the site just to showcase your company? Is there any planned interactivity that the customer can play with? Is the site going to need to be updated regularly like 4+ times per week or maybe only once or twice a month?
