My company gives a $500 allowance for off-site consultants, of which I'm one.

I restocked the khakis and blue shirts last year and I'm REALLY sick of them now. :(

Give me sites or ideas of what to buy. I'd wear hipster clothes as long as they're not too outrageous, I will need to wear them to work on occasion.

(postcount ++'s not minded)

To give you an idea of how fashionably helpless I am. I don't know what that store is.

I haven't been in a mall in five years or so.

J. Crew and Lands' End (catalog, or from Sears...same high quality stuff). Clean out their entire stock of dress shirts, and get some different color khakis (brown, green, etc.). And maybe some nice wool dress pants for winter.

I'm ALWAYS to hot, so I think I'll skip the wool pants. I really hate mens dress pants, unless you're in a suit you look like a management dork. I also despise any pants with pleats.

Try the always classic Hilfiger polos. Available in a multitude of colours.

I'd suggest J.Crew

Think stripes.

I'm aware that for high end (even medium) stuff $500 is not a lot of money. Then again from 15-25 I shopped at resale pretty much exclusively for my clothes so it's a big deal for me... :D

I think we have contrary tastes. I don't care for polos. I've tried. I've put a couple on but never been able to bring myself to walk out the door with them on.

OK, you don't like dress shirts and polos... That leaves us with T-shirts, and we know you can't wear those.

BTW, don't even think about wearing a short-sleeved button-down. I'll kill you.

I have no metrosexual authority, but here goes:

- no to brown khakis and blue shirts (that is a fashion death)
- no tapered pants, openings should be straight and cover some part of your shoes
- no pleats...go for plain front pants, pleats make you look wider
- pants should have no cuffs
- wear nice shoes with your pants (refrain from skechers...not to knock on them they're ok shoes, but we are now in the working world....no more summers at Best Buys). Think Kenneth Cole..square toe shoes.
- wear pants and shirts that fit your build; fitted is better than baggy.
- check out jcrew and banana republic. I tend to go to Marshalls and TJ Maxxes or Ross for clothes that look like those but at half the price

good luck on your metrosexual makeover

get some classic pants. you can probably avoid the pleats if you look hard enough. try jcrew and banana republic. if you dare, try hitting up an outlet mall and look for a ralph lauren polo. you can also try kenneth cole. another good place is a department store - i.e. macy's. best deals are on the weekends.

as for shirts, just go simple dress shirts. if you're tired of blue, try various shades of red. try to avoid white - it gives me that office space vibe everytime i see it. you can also try gray and cream.

there are some nice "almost" sweater shirts that are available not now but later in fall that are a nice change from a dress shirt. banana usually has them, as does jcrew.

No No.. I did appreciate your dress shirt suggestion. I have no beef with those.

I do (unfortunately??) wear short sleeve button downs. Why is this bad?

i see it and i think "michael bolton from office space." it just looks cheesy in a business environment. i think business and i think conservative, so please cover your arms. it's like chest hair - i don't need to see it peeking through the unbuttoned shirt, so i don't want to stare at your hairy arms in a meeting.

My arms are not hairy. You'd be seeing a tattoo. :p
This corporation (and it's a major one) is EXTREMELY laid back on dress. They really don't care that much what we wear. We have a casual casual friday and can wear jeans and t-shirts (which means they're also covered, which is nice).

banana republic has nice khakis and so does old navy.

trust me, you'll look better wearing a short sleeved polo shirt than if you wear a short sleeved dress shirt.

my office is business casual... and my outfit consists of the above khakis and polo shirts

old navy khakis are like 25 bucks and br polos are like 40 bucks

you can get quite a bit for 500

banana, express, and j crew

as far as the short-sleeved shirts go, those look absolutely geeky on most guys. There are select few who can pull it off.

My 2 cents :p

so what's wrong with pleats? I've tried on non pleated pants and they just don't fit right. I prefer the pleats with a tucked in, solid colored, long sleeve shirt. Classic, casual, comfortable. But as a programmer, I do my best work in a white tshirt and tighty-whities. My coworkers tend to have a problem with it though...
