Need help speeding up Sony laptop

I have a relative that has a Sony Vaio VGN-N325E laptop and he wants me to speed it up. One problem is it only has 1 gig of ram and is running Vista.

I have never seen a computer this slow. It takes several minutes just to open a simple program like HWMonitor. Now it looks like somebody has already done the usual stuff. The temporary internet files, cookies has been cleaned, the graphics have been turned down to the most basic theme, it does not look like Vista at all, icons have been hidden as well. Hard drive has already been defragged, still plenty of free space on the hard drive.

What else can I do besides reinstall Windows? Once it gets this slow, is there anything that can be done to speed it back up without reinstalling Windows? When I talk to him again, I am going to recommend adding another gig of ram and possibly upgrading to Windows 7.

upping the ram would definately speed it up. though re-installing the OS will get rid of any extra programs that may have been overlooked/hidden.
