Need Help Speeding up Notebook!

Due to finanical reasons I decided to get rid of my fairly high end desktop and just keep my laptop to use as my main machine. The problem is that my notebook feels so sluggish when compared to my desktop. I use Notebook Hardware Control to keep my cpu's @ 1.73Ghz all the time instead of using dynamic switching. I know that my X2 is almost a full 1Ghz faster, but I am trying to make the notebook as fast as possible. I recently just upgraded to a full 2GB of ram which is the maxium supported. I use AutoCAD 07 and a lighting program called Visual daily, and usually have Outlook, AIM, iTunes, and FF 2.0 open. I have the Virtual Memory set to 2046MB (static) at the moment. Do you guys think this would offer the best performance? With the above mentioned programs open, Task Manager reports that I have 1.3GB of ram available and th PF Usage is around 500MB. Would I be better off to disable Virtual Memory? I have been pondering upgrading to Vista when my upgrade disc arrives so I know I could use ReadyBoost. I might have to hold off due to issues with Vista and CAD from what some users are reporting.

Do you have a 7200RPM hard drive? If not, your notebook HD is the biggest bottleneck. You'll notice marginal improvement if you move onto a faster hard drive.
Just be happy w/ your notebook 'cause whatever you do, it won't get anywhere near your desktop performance.

That is highly dependant on the OS and the applications used.

Thanks for the info. I am shopping around for a decent priced 7200rpm drive now, I just hope it won't kill my battery life. I am also considering picking up a Core 2 Duo 7200 and selling my 2250 on ebay. Irish, I have tweaked the registry quite a bit, along with using TuneXP to move the boot files to the edge of the drive etc.

And,... for best performance, don't run on battery power unless you have to. Use the A/C adapter.
