Hi, downstairs I have my cable modem and SMC wireless router and upstairs I have my main computer with a wireless card and a secondary comptuer next to it. The main and secondary comptuer are connected to each other with a cross over cable. The main one has XP and the secondary one has 98. How would I set it up so that the secondary one can access the internet through the main one? I tried Xp's network wizard but it didn't work.

Thanks

It has nothing to do with Windows 98 or WinXP they would work together very nice if connected correctly.

You are creating Double NATing.

First NAT the Router than what ever you are using between the two crossed over computers.

Wireless Client cards are available as low as $10. Get a card for the second computer upstairs and cut the ?umbilical cord?.

Thanks for the responses. I rearly really use my secondary machine for internet activites, so buying a wireless network card for it wouldn't be necessary. Would it be better if I upgraded the secondary machine to 2k? What's double Nating and how is that set up?

You will find an explanation about NAT here.

Link to: Cable/DSL Routers - NAT & Ports.

A regular Network can not work correctly with more than one NAT.

Currently you have a NAT in the Router, and than you use another NAT with the two NICs arrangement.

If you already upgrading upgrade to WinXP.

WinXP basically replaced Win2000Pro.

Win2003 replaced Win2000server.
