Need help setting up wireless security

Trying to setup linksys wireless 801.11b router to work with the laptop. I want to enable security and router gives me 4 choices:

WPA PreShared
WPA Radius
Radius
WEP

Now switch to the laptop part: it does see the wireless network, but when I try to connect to it, I'm being asked for the network key. It would only accept 5 or 10 character keys. I tried every possible combination between the router and the laptop - no dice.

The laptop is IBM ThinkPad w/ Centrino if that makes any difference. If it would make life easier you can IM me at argo516.

P.S. One more question. I'm going to hook up my TiVo through wireless as well. I bought LinkSys USB wireless adapter. Will I still be able to use security, or is MAC filtering my only alternative?

and to make matters even more creepy, i too was thinking about hooking up my replaytv through wireless...

you'd think between two threads we'd get some replies 😉

anyways i did some investigating, and at least on my laptop, the cisco 802.11b minipci card used does not support wpa psk... radius appears to require some sort of server... which leaves me with crappy wep 🙁
 
I couldn't even get WEP to work last night. What I might do is disable security altogether and then enable MAC filtering, which should disallow access for everybody except my 4 MACs (Laptop, Desktop, PS2 and TiVO)

That's not enough unfortunately, MAC address are unencrypted and are even easier to pick up then WEP keys. Bottom line, you need your WEP.

Use pre-shared keys. Define them on the router/access point (make sure you write them down) and then on the wireless card itself. That should take care of the authentication. what I generally do is type the key in notepad and then copy it onto the access point and card. That way there is no mistakes.

Then you can do mac address filtering and disable broadcast SSID
