I am trying to get ssh to authenticate using public/private keys so that i can setup autossh from another server
This is what i did:
#ssh-keygen -t rsa
#cat id_rsa.pub >> .ssh/authorized_keys

#ssh -v 10.72.82.41
where 10.72.82.41 is local address
i made both dir .ssh and the file authorized_keys to have permission 600. But i still cant authenticate using the key.

And i get authetication failure :

you need the public key in the authorized_keys on the server and the private key on the client. Based on what you posted, it looks like you were only working on one system.

Looks like it didn't try the id_rsa you generated but it did find and try an id_dsa, whatever that is from. Make sure id_rsa is in /root/.ssh or specify its location with the -i flag. Also make sure it's 600.

Skeeedunt's recommendation is also good, at least for debugging purposes.

sciencewhiz, it looks like he's sshing to himself.
