i'm trying to setup winxp for an athlon 1.2ghz system for my cousin. the only issue is when i go to boot from cd, it'll finish loading all the driverss in the first part and when it goes to start up windows, it'll just freeze. i also tried using a boot disk and doing E:\i386\winnt.exe and it freezes after a while too. when i go to boot from cd, the onboard mobo's antivirus warns that i have a boot virus on my hard disk. however, i have tried other hdd's and they all gave the same issue. i tried plugging the hdd into another machine and did a virus check and it came up with nothing. i even formatted the drive from NTFS back to FAT32 and it still gave the same issues. has any one experienced something like this?

You may have something set in the BIOS that prevents the windows setup from modifying the boot sector/MBR. It may be called antivirus protection, boot sector protection or something like that in the BIOS, should be easy to find. Disable it for the install.

Another fix for this may be to get the disk for the hd,or a format program that can do a full format and partitioning of the hd per Windows XP Specifications, with the NTFS file system. I dont know about other hd companies, but seagate bundles a bootable cd that has diskwizard on it which can format and parition the hd this way, and it has fixed this kind of problem for me before.

yeah, i believe it is seagate, though it's kinda old so i dont have any of the package, i can prolly go download it though. i've tried fdisk/format, would this be more effective? i've even updated the bios and it still doesn't work.

Updating the BIOS is different from going in and disabling its boot-virus protection. Get in there and hunt for it :)

disabling it gets rid of that warning message that the hard disk has a boot virus, but it still freezes in that same spot. i tried downloading the discwizard thing for the seagate drive and when booting from floppy it fails to load reporting a "TNT.41400: INITEMULATOR:FLOATING POINT EMULATOR (EMUTNT.DLL) IS REQUIRED" error.
