Need Help Setting up new Router!

So i just bought a Apple Airport Extreme to speed up my internet but having a bit of trouble connecting it. I have a Arris TM502G Modem for my phone and internet, but when i connect the Airport to the ethernet port on the back of the modem it says no internet connectivity. I also have a Netgear CDG24G Advanced Cable Modem , supplied by my ISP for wireless, but im trying to replace that which is why i got the airport. I tried connecting the ethernet cable to the Netgear modem and it got connectivity. Im trying to bypass the netgear modem as it overheats and seems slow. So how would i go about connecting the AIrport to my Arris Modem? Or do i need to buy a certain modem to do so? Thanks for the Help

Unplug the Netgear give it back to ISP.

2. Plug ethernet cable from Arris modem to WAN port of airport.
3. Unplug modem and airport from power.
4. Plug modem back in, wait for all lights to turn back on.
5. Plug airport in to power.
6. Login to router and setup DHCP and wireless.

Never used a airport express, but isn't there some kind of apple software they give you to install on your computer to auto setup the network for you?

Just because of my experiences with ISP's, when you return equipment...keep the receipt they give you....and watch you bill to make sure they don't try to charge you.

edit: the Arris modem you said you have also has a batter in it, you'll need to pull that to hook up hte new router.

ImDOnly1 plan is on target but one more step:

2. Plug ethernet cable from Arris modem to WAN port of airport.
3. Unplug modem and airport from power.
also remove battery for 60 seconds, reinstall battery and continue
4. Plug modem back in, wait for all lights to turn back on.
5. Plug airport in to power.
6. Login to router and setup DHCP and wireless.

Just having Hardware called Modem, Router etc. does not mean that a network is going to work.

First make sure that The Arris does work as a modem and provides service when connected to your particular ISP.

😎

How would i check whether it works as a modem by itself, when both the Arris modem and the netgear are plugged in i can connect to internet through LAN from netgear modem. Does my ISP need to activate it somehow?

@ImDonly1 yes there is a software on my pc/iphone that ive used to get into the airport settings but when connected to the Arris modem alone it just says "Cannot establish interent connection, unplugg modem and replug in" Can only get to the settings via the netgear modem.

What you can do to check if the Arris works alone. Plug the Arris in and connect a cable from the Arris directly to your computer. If this doesn't work, then the Arris isn't provisioned correctly with your ISP, will have to call them to get it activated.

This will still require a power cycle of the modem.

Well i tried a few things before i posted. I had only hooked up the arris modem and an ethernet to the Airport and unplugged/ removed battery from it then turned it on and still nothing. Ill try to hook a computer up tp the arris with the netgear modem unplugged to see if i am even getting interent through that specific modem. In theory i just want a Cable modem to recieve internet / phone then connect the airport to there and be done with it. No other hardware like this netgear modem that likes to overheat on me. Any suggestion on real good cable modems that can take phone / interent?

So i hooked up a computor straight to the Arris and it came up with an unidentified Network but couldnt establish network connectivity. So that must mean i needa activate the modem with my ISP?

Im probably going to upgrade my internet service from standard to ultimate to better support gaming, Any suggestions on a good Modem to buy?

So just to make sure, if the modem is activated with ISP connecting the Airport Extreme to it should allow me to use wireless internet/ LAN on many computors just like with this netgear one?

If a Modem is a Modem only device and its Ethernet output is providing live Internet signal, then any Wireless Router will work with it as a wire LAN and Wireless provider.

If a modem is actuality a Modem/Router and provides valid (already Routed) Internet signal, then any Wireless Router that is configured as an Access Point will work with it.

Using Access Points or Wireless Cable/DSL Routers as a Switch with an Access Point - http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

I am afraid that you really do not know the real modes of functions of your Devices. When to use LAN or WAN, and how to deal with subnets. 😕

Yea , when it comes to internet im pretty clueless. Thats why im on here trying to get some answer 🙂 Since my modem now is used to connect my phone line im going to need a certain modem that has a phone jack right? Those are called eMTA or something right?

Yes. You should check which ones are compatible with your ISP. Some ISPs like Comcast don't allow you to bring your own eMTA, you have to rent it from them. I think it varies by location.

Are with you comcast?

I have Time Warner. I've decided im going to cancel my home phone anyways since we all use cells now. So probably wont need the eMTA and just gonna get a good modem to go with my Airport Extreme. Trying to upgrade to the Ultimate internet which is like 30 down and 5 up. Is the Motorola SB6121 a decent one?

I have a SB6121.

I would either get the SB6121, SB6141, or Zoom 5341J.
The SB6141 and 5341J support higher speeds and are newer (but it doesn't matter since you are only getting the 30mbps package).

If cost is the same I would get the 5341J (make sure it says J) or SB6141. If you can get the 6121 for cheaper then get that. I got mine used on eBay for $30 (but came in like new condition).

The SB6141 sell for $68 with shipping from here, best price I have seen online

Alright thanks, The airport should work with those once my ISP activates the modem right? Sadly in my area 30mbs is just about the highest i can get. Probably gonna grab the SB6141 or Zoom just gotta make sure it can be used by my ISP.
