I am in NJ right now trying to set up a network for a friend. It consists of:

One HP P4 system (WinXP Home)
One generic Cyrix C3 EZRA based system (Win98SE)
A router
A DSL modem

Both computers connect to the router via CAT5 and the router connects to the internet via the DSL modem.

Problem:

I have run created a Network Setup disk on the XP system and run it on the Win98 system. After it reports the installation was successful, I cannot access the network from the Win 98 system. Now, from the XP system, I can see the Win98 computer, but cannot access any files on it.

When I goto Neighborhood Network, I see 'Entire Network,' and when I try to access, its does not allow me.

Any suggestions?

JackMDS:

Thanks for the reply. I'll get to reading that.

The XP system sees the 98SE system, and can access its hard disk drive along with its sharedocs folder. Unfortunately, it is not true for the other way around. The 98SE system doesn't see anything on the network.

UPDATE: I have just transferred a notepad file from the XP system to the 98 system no problem. The problem still is the 98 computer cannot see the XP computer, even though it just recieved a file from it.

Read Jack's stuff, especially the part about NetBEUI. Solved my problem which was the same as yours with two computers running the exact same operating systems. Be careful running the Network setup wizard, it causes some of the problems you are having.

Yeah, is the firewall on the XP box on? If so, that is probably your problem. You'll need to open up some ports or turn the XP firewall off.
