Here's the setup:
Running WinXP and I have Charter Cable with a Motorola Cable Modem hooked up with the Netgear RT314 Router.

I had it setup when I was running windows 98se using winipcfg. I then changed OS and everything STILL works. So then I forget to pay the bill one month and they disconnect me. I call them to reactivate...it works but only when I directly connect it without the router. so it goes from motorola cable modem directly to my computer and it works. but when i run from cable modem to router and from router to my computer...it doesn't work.
Windows XP doesn't have winipcfg anymore so i go to DOS and try "IPCONFIG /release" but it doesn't release it. I go to my web browser and type in "192.168.0.1" to try to access router so I can try to configure it but it says it cannot load the page.

Please HELP!!! TIA

Hmm...WindowsXP should be able to autoconfigure it for cable modem, at least that's what it did for me. I think your cable company logged one of your MAC addresses. Try to hook up your computer to the router, and tell them that you installed a new NIC. They will do a scan, and log the MAC of your router, and you should be able to connect. Hope this helps. Let us know what happens.

try pinging the router first to see that u have a connection to it. then if using the web browser interface still doesnt work, try telnet'ing to it. they prolly just gave you another computer name and/or you did not configure your dns entries correctly in winxp.

It sounds like they're limiting access by MAC address. So just clone your PC's MAC in the RT314 and see if it'll connect then. Leave everything on DHCP at first so you don't have any DNS type problems.

Your modem is bound to your NIC's MAC address. The easiest solution (if it works) is to spoof the NIC's MAC address to the router. Use the routers setup and configuration utility to accomplish this. If you do not know how to do this simply go to your browser and type in 192.168.0.1 into the address bar and a passwor box will appear. Type "admin" for the user and "1234" as the password and you will get to the setup wizard. As you go through it you will find an option to spoof the MAC address.

If this does not work then, like someone has already posted, simply call the cable co. and tell them you installed a new NIC.

This is the problem...I can't get into my router configuration. When I try to go to my browser and type in 192.168.0.1 it says that internet explorer cannot load this page or something to that effect. Thanks for the help...I'll be trying them out.

Check to see that you are Automatically Detecting Proxy Settings...then just keep on clicking refresh. Sometimes, my router is tempermental about working. Just keep on trying, and you should get into it sooner or later. Also, try turning off your modem and the router, turn the modem back on after about a minute, and then turn the router back on. It might help. Good luck.

Is there some way to reset the router back to factory configuration, assuming you may have changed something, and did your router get all its info from the ISP?

If there are some settings you had to enter like Gateway info into your computer, why not write them down, turn off your computer and only hook up the router and see if you can get in, and then enter the necessary info into the router, then power down and hook the router inline with your cable modem.

Just a thought...

I had that happen to me. reset the router there's a button on the back of it after you reset it, go to the setup and do the MAC adress thing and it will work.
You do need to reset it first as the old info is stored in it's memory.

RT314 is fast but hard to set.

You may need a RS232 cable to reset your RT314 first. You can get more info from your Netgear installation CD. The cable is specific (male/female) but hard to tell from its looking, you may try all RS232 cables you get (it's a pain). There is another way to ftp your router but I can't remember.
I play with my RT314 often. I notice sometimes you have to topple its power switch serveral times to reset it or get it working again. When you do this, watch if the test LED blinking (self-test) and if the WAN LED (data talk).

I also suggest you to upgrade your firmware, which can be downloaded from the Netgear website. Netgear service is really poor. Download is what you can get.

Good luck

Are you on crack?? Netgear has great service. They offer a toll free tech support number that I think is also 24/7. I have called them several times and they have always been quick and patient. They will spend an hour on the phone if need be to help you solve your problem. You also will not sit on hold very long, I have called in the middle of the afternoon and waited no more than a few minutes.

Netgear's tech sup[port number is 1-888-638-4327 or 1-800-211-2069. Get your facts straight before you make blanket ignorant statements!
