I have one of the new Toshiba HD-DVD players & want to set it up to my cable modem to take advantage of the upcoming HD-DVD internet features & firmware upgrades. My main problem is my cable modem is in another room away from my home theater setup(including the HD-DVD player). How would I go about setting this player up to my modem wirelessly? I do have a hub/switch set up right next to my modem for addional ethernet ports & I would like to avoid using a router. Is it possible to hook up one wireless device to the hub & the other to the player creating a wireless connection to my modem without having to use a router? Im not much of a wireless guru so I apologize.

Thanks

Sorry man, but I don't think you are going ot be able to do it without something handling DHCP and NAT. Some modems will do it, but many cable modems will not, as they only assign one per device, which is why you need the router. I am not too familiar with the new HD-DVD (which you couldn't wait for them to decide which format to call king huh?), but I would imagine that it will need to get an IP number from someplace.

So what I would suggest, is to put a wireless on your cable modem, hook your desktop via wireless and plug the HD-DVD directly into the router. You will run a patch cable to the router temporarily, just long enough to do the setup.

Good luck, I would be interested in hearing more abou thow this works out.

I got it to work. I bought a Buffalo Router/WAP & a Buffalo Ethernet converter. I used the router as a WAP/hub & hookup was simple since both devices supported AOSS. The DVD player had setup options for DHCP & NAT-I turned them on & everything worked great.
