I just finished my first pc build and it seems to pretty much gone off with out a hitch except I can't set up my second hardrive. Here is the deal I got a 160 gig sata hardrive with windows installed on my new comp and I pilfered my 40 gig IDE hardrive from my old computer and want to instal it. I've tried setting it up as a master and a slave but neither have worked. In fact when I hook this hardrive up my computer will not even load into window. I assume the problem is that the 40 gig hardrive still hasa working version of xp on it, but I would like to be able to get some files off it and transfer to other hardrive before I reformat the 40 gig. I'm pretty much a newb at hardware since this is my first build so be specific with help.

Well I have seen a damaged drive cause something like this before. I've also seen adding a hard drive finally cause an underpowered psu to buckle and crash. What exactly happens when you boot, can you get into the BIOS? Does the PC properly detect the drive? Are you sure that the boot order is such that SATA is booting before PATA otherwise you may actually be loading the old drive's xp, which will generally crash if a completely different system tries to load it.

my comp locks right before windows should start you can get into the bios. It sees the drive in the bios.
I'm not sure if sata is set to boot before pata I'll check thnx.
