Need help setting up Linksys on my Abit KT7

I have the following components:

Duron 650@800
Abit KT7 (Latest bios WZ bios, not RAID)
20 Gig WD hard drive
Hercules GeForce 2 MX (32 Meg AGP).
Soundblaster SCSI-2 ASP sounds card on ISA bus (SCSI doesn't work, wants IRQ 9 because it's not available).
HSF (I/O Magic) Winmodem on PCI slot 4.

I've attempted to install a Linksys 10/100 network card but keep getting system lockups. I have tried to install this card on each and every slot. I've also obtained the latest drivers from Linksys. I can take the modem out and install the Linksys sucessfully, but can't have both in at the same time.

The problem seems to stem from IRQ conflicts. I have attempted to manually set the IRQ's in the PCI/PNP configuration menu. As I boot, the ACPI function reassigns the IRQs.
I've looked all over the internet and the newsgroups but have not found a clean way to fix this problem (I do not want to use a hacked bios as some have proposed.).

How can I disable this ACPI function or how can I install this card into my system without lockups? By the way, I've tried to install at stock clock and this doesn't work either.

Appreciate any help!

Will try the differnt NIC tonight.

Any experience on which slot configuration I should use?

How about IRQ/DMA/ etc... or should I continue to leave everything at Auto?

Do you have a KT7?

No. It's an Abit.

You don't have a resource problem, you have a compatibility problem. Win98 manages resources just fine.

Russ, got enough power supplies in your rig??!!

Hey, Network question. I bought the Linksys home network kit (2 cards + 1 hub).
So, not having any network experience, I just plugged in the 2 cards (one in my computer, one in my roomates computer). I removed my modem to get it working. BTW: My roomate has an older PII Dell. Linksys install was just like hot butter in his machine (smooth).

So, being the genius that I am, I installed Win98 Internet connection sharing, disregarded the hub, and tried to plug the two NIC's together with one long cable.... Didn't work. So, after the next 8 hours of trying, I tried to install the hub. Suddenly, lights! Still no joy.
I can "see" my machine in the network but not his. He can see neither mine, nor his. He's got a cable modem attached to his machine on a seperate card.

I think I can't install the hub between himself and the cable modem, because he's only got one login, and the service won't allow multiple logins of the same user.

Sorry for the long story. Any suggestions?

Just one per motherboard.

It would only work if you used a crossover cable. Straight thru isn't designed to run between systems.

My guess is that this is a protocol issue. Make sure his and yours have exactly the same setup. Specifically, make sure both have NetBEUI installed and have exactly the same workgroup name.

The hub should be attached to the second NIC in his system (the one that that the cable modem is NOT plugged in to) and then your system plugged in to the hub. The ICS will take care of the sharing of the connection.

I think -

if you use a cross-over cat5 utp cable, direct connection would work w/o a hub...

you may setup your r/m's pc as a gateway, for you to get inet access. Just grab any proxy software from tucows...i like winproxy personally...

if you put the cablemodem into the uplink socket on ur hub, and connect your two pc's to other ports, you should be able to get dhcp server found you 2 IP's...i think every cable isp would support >=2 ip's...

just my 2 cents

Appreciate all the thoughts. Will try and report back later.

Where can I get the proxy s/w??

NetBEUI?? You mean like add the Microsoft NetBeui protocol? Oops. Man, the Linksys home network didn't provide these types of instructions. Anything else I should know?

Also, is there a good link/instruction on home networking that you know of?

Thanks for the $0.02. I could use a few more than that....

I have a KT7 with the following equip and it works fine

AGP Geforce 2 MX
(1) PCI slot empty
(2) Linksys 10/100
(3) Asus SCSI
(4) PCI slot empty
(5) Pyro FireWire card
(6) Sound Blaster in last PCI slot next to ISA slot

try that, it took me some moving around to get it.
