I really don't know much about routers...

I need to set up an ftp on my home computer so I can access it from college, but i'm not sure exactly how to go about setting it up...I used the Web Setup feature built in and used the defaults (under Virtual Server, it added Service Port 21 and "enable" to ID #1). After saving, I still can't connect to this computer...is there anything else i'm supposed to do?

Thanks in advance for the help.

A bit more info would be appreciated.

What OS are you running at home?

How is your system at home wired up?

What kind of Internet connection do you have at home?

When you are at home, can you do a 'ftp localhost' and get connected?

Can you ping your home machine from college?

1) I'm running WinXP Pro
2) We've got Verizon DSL (PPPoE, the router logs in automatically), the dsl modem/router's in the basement, and we have cables going to our main rooms directly (long rj45 cables)
3) yeah, when I set the ftp up, I can connect to it from my own computer (the computer that's serving), but I can't connect to it from outside the house (I haven't tried connecting from another computer in the house yet)
4) I haven't specifically pinged my computer, but i'm sure it would be unsuccessful, because if i'm not mistaken I kept getting a "connection timed out" message
5) I was using bpftp server

Ok, you should try the ftp thing from another home machine, to make sure that part is ok.
If you can ftp from inside, then the problem is the router.

<edit>
I was just browsing the user manual for your router, and it looks like you should be able
to set everything up via Virtual Services panel. I guess then, you need to check that
you are forwarding to the proper IP address, that your ftp server is able to accept connections,
and that your forwarding is enabled. I have seen on the google threads some mention of port
20 also. I haven't had to mess with port 20, so I don't think that is necessary, but something to
keep in mind. I think that after you verify your routers settings, a reboot of the router might be
in order as well......
</edit>

On my netgear RT311, I had to do 2 things. First, I had to tell the router where to
forward the traffic from port 21 (I had to give it the IP address of my ftp server),
and then I had to enable the forwarding of port 21 traffic, as the router was set up
to drop port 21 traffic by default.

A couple of things you might try, if you can't find the info in your router's user manual. One
thing is to do a search on http://groups.google.com for
say, your router model number (RT311, etc, etc) ftp server, and see if any of the threads
has an indication of how to configure your router to enable ftp forwarding.
