Hey all, I have the Asante FriendlyNET Cable/DSL Router FR3004 and I've been trying to put up an ftp server on my computer but it doesn't seem to want to work. I did map port 21 through my router as was instructed but I still seem to be having trouble. I tried ftping into my computer from my roommate's computer using my local ip address just to trouble shoot and I couldn't connect. BlackICE defender showed me an alert of his "attack" on my computer which made sense. I figured maybe that was the reason so I exited BlackICE and tried again. It still didn't work. This time I opened BlackICE and put trust attacker on for my roommates computer and then he could get in. Then I tried to ftp from his computer to our shared external ip. I couldn't connect again, but again BlackICE was flashing notifying me of my attack on myself. I tried exiting BlackICE again and it didn't work. Opened it up. Put it on trust user and once again I was able to connect, except this time I couldn't actually get in all the way. It got stopped at
"150 Opening data connection for directory for directory list"
and just sat there for a minute or two and then displayed
"426 Cannot retrieve"
I read somewhere else that I might have to map port 20 in my router too because that is used by ftp's as well. Could that be causing the directory list problem? So is BlackICE preventing people from accessing my computer even when it's not open and running? Or is it that when I put trust user it somehow changes something for that particular user that allows them to connect? Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Sorry for the novel but I like to get all the info out there so that I don't waste people's time having them tell me something I already tried. Ok, gotta go to a meeting, I'll be back in a little over an hour just in case anyone responds with a question.

So do I have to uninstall BlackICE then. Cause even when I don't run it, they still can't connect for some reason. I know it's odd but it's true, I've tried it so many ways and it's always the same. Unless they're trusted by BlackICE whether it's running or not, they can't get in. I guess I'll try uninstalling it. Thx.

Doesn't the Asante already provide firewall functionality? You really shouldn't need to use BlackICE in addition to the Asante.

yeah that's true it is supposed to be a firewall, but I still managed to get a trojan since having it and the guy was able to do $hit with my comp. I got rid of it, but now I'm paranoid and I wasn't sure exactly how much protection the router was giving me. If I have BlackICE atleast I can see the incoming activity and stuff.
