Need help setting up dual monitors

I just bought a second monitor, and I am having problems setting it up the way I would like. I basically want to set it up so that I could be playing a game on one monitor while having things like the internet and instant messneger up on the other monitor. I think what I need to do is something called multiple desktops. I have the catylast drivers which have hydravision as part of the package but I cannot get a different desktop on each monitor. The only way I have been able to get it to work in some fashion is having one desktop on one monitor at a time. Any ideas?
