Man I used to be good at this stuff. Not I can't even set the CPU speed on my motherboard :(

Anyway, I just bought an AMD Athlon XP1800 with a Biostar M7VKQP motherboard. How do I set the CPU speed?

Is it in the BIOS? The last mobo I setup had a multiplier and a frequency setting.

How in the world have I become this clueless?

I'm not familiar with that particular motherboard, but if the cpu wasn't automatically detected and set to the right settings, you will either have to probably go into the bios and set them there. That is, if those settings are alterable from the bios. You know how to get into the bios right? Delete key on startup.

I am not familiar with the board, but the manual for the M7VKQ shows a jumper (JCLK1) between the memory sockets and the edge of the board that is used to set the clock rate, 100 MHz (pins 1 and 2) or 133 MHz (pins 2 and 3). I didn't see anything in the BIOS section of the manual for setting the multiplier. It may be that the default is used and the BIOS does not support setting the multiplier of an unlocked CPU.

Thanks.

What should the clock speed be? I see that setting in the BIOS now.

It goes from 100 to 132. Should it be 132?

no, don't set it to 132, simply because if the bios only goes from 100-132 then you need to set a jumper on the motherboard.
find the jumper on your motherboard that you would set from 100 to 133 fsb. it should be near your ram or in that area.
just take it off and set it to 133. then you'll be at 1533mhz or 1800+
good luck :)

Thanks. I could've swore the jumper was closed when I first put the mobo in. I guess I was wrong. Closing the jumper worked.
