AKA a wire

needs to be cheap and small enough to conceal on my person, and good enough to record a conversation with about 2-3 feet of distance.

Anybody know the laws on audio recording in California?

Something with a detachable, wired mic would be better, so I can just drop the recording device into my pocket and run the mic where it needs to be.

The more discreet, the better.

BTW its illegal to record someone without thier approval.

On phone lines depending on the state only one side needs to know about the recording at least thats what I heard about 5 years ago.

Now it may be different so I don't know.

I think you are right about recording in public because I remember seeing CSI and some pervert kid getting upskirt shots of girls and it wasn't illegal since he wasn't recording their voices.

Because we all know that everything we see on TV and read on the internet is true.

No that is actually partially true. I do remember that's the reason why security cameras don't record sound.
