Need help setting up a peer to peer network

So I just hooked up my desktop and laptop together using NIC's and a crossover cable. The trouble is I can't get the peer to peer network enabled. Looked at some online tutorials and the such, but nothing seems to work. Have TCP/IP set up on both, and I set the desktop IP to 192.168.0.1 and laptop to 192.168.0.2. I try pinging the laptop with the desktop, but it times out. The hardware isn't the issue, because when I put the laptop on standby, the LAN icon switched to "cable unplugged", but restores the connection when I turn the laptop on again...
What am I doing wrong here???
