Need help setting up a Linux box

Perhaps I'll get more help here, this my first venture into the Linux world so I'd appreciate any help.

I want to make a Linux server out of my old computer (AMD K6-2 450, 64MB RAM). This computer will be on 24/7. I'll be using it to download/upload off of IRC and newsgroups, ftp serve. Currently I do all that on my main Windows machine but I'm tired of having to stop downloading or losing my my place in a queue when Windows crashes, when I play a game, etc.

I have DSL (PPPoE). I want to be able to transfer files between the two machines easily. I'd also like the ability to access/control the linux box through the Windows box using something like VNC so I don't have to have a separate monitor, kb, mouse, for the linux machine. Should I get a router and connect both machine to it? Or should install install two NICs in the linux box and have that act as a gateway?

BTW, is a K6-2 450 overkill for the tasks I need to do? I'm thinking of downgrading the CPU to Pentium which doesn't need a fan so there will be less noise (both computers will be in my bedroom so space and noise are factors). What's the highest Pentium which doesn't require a fan? P133?

As far as software goes, I've downloaded Mandrake as I've heard that's the easiest distribution to use for beginners. What newreader programs (suitable for binaries) and what irc programs for Linux should I use? Thanks for any help!

usenet: pan if you want a gui
irc: irssi (irssi.org) for cli, xchat for gui
file sharing with Windows: SAMBA

If you want a gui you should probably keep the k6-2, unless you want to use something like blackbox or icewm. They are smaller than kde or gnome and wont use/need as many resources. Either a router or the linux box would be fine to share access. The router would be easier to setup though.

EDIT: Mandrake is a resource hog, so if you want to downgrade I recommend a "lighter" distro.

I would suggest you get a friend who knows his stuff to set up the box for you... it's really hard to do everything yourself when you are a newbie.. that's how I got my webserver box up and running

You learn more if you do it yourself though. That was my motivation for doing most of the crap Ive done 😛

EDIT: And you get great happy happy joy joy feelings when you take 20min to write a shell script to automate a small part of your job that your friend couldnt get to work 😀😀😀
