Need help selecting video card for new build

I'm looking for a cheap but up-to-date video card for a future XP/Vista build. I figure I'll install Vista if reports about the service release are favorable.
I don't play 3D games anymore but I may want to retire this pc some day to do Tivo-like recordings.

I'm thinking of something in the 3000 series from ATI

or

the latest nVidia for perhaps some future linux use.

hey i just bought a 2600pro 512mb for my htpc. since im still waiting for other parts, i could throw this card into my pc and see how it stacks up against the 7800gt 256mb. want me to run a benchmark? which one?

the card cost $80 but there is $25 rebate... but it also has hdmi/dvi output which i thought was nice
